Linux Crash Course

This is a practitioner driven program specifically tailored to get students up and running with common system administrator tasks.
We will be taking a first principles approach to the Linux platform and you will get both the conceptual and hands-on understanding of the platform. Linux administration tasks will be well motivated and you’ll develop a deeper understanding of tools that the platform offers with how and when to apply them. This class will teach you skills that would be applicable to both Fedora, such as Red Hat and CentOS, and Debian, such as Ubuntu, based Linux variants.

20 STUDENTS ENROLLED

  • Linux systems  – History, variants, shells, filesystem, editors and documentation.
  • Platform users – Users, groups, ownership, archiving, compression, remote connections (ssh), transfers (scp, and rsync) and pluggable authentication (PAM).
  • Day to day tasks – User processes, system and boot processes, services and daemons, locating resources.
  • On-demand tasks – Log management, scheduling tasks, Installing software and packages, Network management.
  • Configuration tasks – Storage management (filesystems, devices, mounting, partitioning, LVM, and NFS), Virtual machines (KVM), and troubleshooting with rescue mode operations.

Familiarity with System administration task on any platform (Windows, OSX etc.) will be very useful for you to internalize the core concepts
